Joybert Almeida's triple helped Curtorim Gymkhana trounce Chandor Club 3-1 to seal a berth in the quarter-finals of the South Goa McDowell's No. 1 Yaari Premiere Cup inter village football tournament organized by Cuncolim Union at Government Village Playground, Cuncolim on Monday. The match was goalless at half time.
Curtorim Gymkhana started the game in full flow as Joybert and Milagres Fernandes broke through early on, in a flurry of attacks. As the match progressed, both the teams created clear goal scoring opportunities but their forwards wasted from close range. Both the teams had equal number of scoring chances but their forwards either shot wide or couldn't get past the keeper from close range.
Curtorim Gymkhana conjured up two scoring opportunities but first Milagres Fernandes' shot went straight into the hands of rival goalkeeper and later Joybert fumbled with his finish when Neville Fernandes had laid him on the platter.
At the other end, Chandor Club had a couple of scoring chances but Moses D'Sa and Samson Noronha were the culprits as the duo frittered away chances from hand shaking distance. With the match nearing lemon break, both the teams went all out in search of goals but defenders stood tall in protecting their citadel.
Post resumption, Curtorim Gymkhana started with great intent and they got the better of Chandor Club. Joybert fired his team's first goal in the 56th minute when he punished the rival goalkeeper with a snap shot, off a well measured cross from Josley Gomes. With the momentum on their side, Curtorim Gymkhana players started to express themselves as they raided the rival opposition box often.
Their efforts paid off when striker Joybert picked up the ball from Neville Fernandes and unleashed a snap shot that beat the Chandor goalkeeper Richard Fernandes in the 58th minute. Down 0-2, Chandor Club went all out and troubled the rival defence with well orchestrated raids and, in the 64th minute, Darren Fernandes scored the consolation goal off a through pass from Sucorro Fernandes.
Unfazed, Curtorim Gymkhana went into the attacking mode and it was more joy for Joybert in the 66th minute as he sealed the game for Curtorim outfit in the 66th minute. Curtorim Gymkhana played the ball around the park in the later part of the game and secured an emphatic 3-1 win.
