It’srare to see a male voice with such power and intensity on the Konkani stage. Sowhen Cyril Ferrao with his naturally enchanting voice took the stage at theRavindra Bhavan Conference Hall, many heads turned to listen in rapt attention tothe voice that ‘rocked’ the venue. It was not only the audience but alsoseveral tiatr artists who were present there that took notice of thisexceptional talent.
When asked about Cyricl’s talent, Rose Ferns exclaimed, “I have been his fanfor many years. With a voice like his, he has to make a debut on the tiatrstage. He should be given songs that will do justice to his rich voice, including quality lyrics. The tiatr audience is of a different naturealtogether. They pay attention to lyrics too. If at all I stage a musical showin the near future, I will surely rope him in and utilise his exceptionalsinging talent.”
Prince Jacob added to Rose Ferns’ statement by saying, “He should enter theKonkani tiatr stage and display his talent, but he may not get the support of agood sound system to back him up as is present for musical shows. If he is interestedin joining the tiatr stage, I am more than willing to give him a break in myfuture show next season.”
Tomazinho Cardozo, playwright and the former president of Tiatr Academy of Goa,was impressed with Ferrao’s performance and said, “With a rich voice like his,his presence on the tiatr stage will surely enrich Konkani music immensely. Inmy opinion he should give it a serious thought.”
Cyril Ferrao is not at all new to Konkani music, and made a smooth transitionfrom the world of English pop and rock music to Konkani contemporary music asearly as in the eighties. Cyril was the main singer for a pop disco albumreleased by the late Chris Perry, ‘Disco Konkani 82’ in the eighties. This in itselfspeaks volumes of this man’s talent and skill when it comes to singing.
