Damodar English High School, Gudi-Paroda, staged a remarkable comeback from a three-goal deficit to defeat Purshottam Walawalkar Higher Secondary School in a penalty shootout and win the U-17 boys’ Nehru Hockey Tournament, securing the right to represent Goa at the national level.
Trailing 0-3 at half-time, Damodar produced a spirited fightback in the third quarter, scoring three goals to force the final into a penalty shootout after the teams were locked 3-3 at full-time.
Rajesh Kalloli scored twice through field goals, with Ansh Gaonkar providing the assists on both occasions. Ansh also scored Damodar’s second goal with a field effort to complete the comeback.
Goalkeeper Prachit Gaonkar proved decisive in the shootout, saving four penalty attempts. Ansh Gaonkar and Gundu Gaikwad converted their penalties to seal a memorable victory for the Gudi-Paroda school.
The triumph was particularly significant given the challenges faced by Damodar’s players, who come from financially modest backgrounds and have limited access to quality sporting facilities and a proper hockey ground. Their opponents, meanwhile, had the advantage of regular practice at the Peddem turf, with several players possessing national-level experience.
Despite these contrasting circumstances, Damodar’s determination, teamwork and fighting spirit helped them overcome the odds and clinch the title.
The team was coached by physical education teacher Amit Dessai, while Laxman Prabhudesai, physical education teacher at Damodar Higher Secondary School, served as team manager.
The victorious squad comprised Ajay Chawan, Rajesh Kalloli, Bhrigu Boro, Prachit Gaonkar, Ansh Gaonkar, Gundu Gaikwad, Akash Bhajantri, Haresh Kampanar, Laksh Gaonkar, Shivam Gavalkar, Mohammad Istihar, Vaibhav Gaonkar, Soham Kumar, captain Kasif Mohammad, Brijesh Yadhav and Sahil Pawar.
