Federation Cup runners-up Dempo Sports Club blanked State Bank of Travancore (SBT) 2-0 to cruise into the semi-finals of the DSK Cup football tournament at DSK Dream City football ground, Pune on Thursday. Dempo led 1-0 at the breather.
Dempo did no more than they needed to and looked the more likely of the teams to score. They had SBT back-pedalling and often kept the SBT goalkeeper on his toes.Dempo inevitably took the lead in the opening session after striker Bevan D'Mello was brought down by rival defender and Uttam Rai made no mistake with the resultant spot-kick to send the rival goalkeeper the wrong way.
Post resumption, Dempo picked up from where they left off the second session and doubled the lead when Annistion Fernandes picked up the ball from Shallum Pires and nicely hooked the ball over the head of an advancing SBT goalkeeper. Dempo coach Mauricio Afonso was elated with the win. "My players gave everything for this win and would want to build on this performance,"said Afonso.
