Five-time champions Dempo Sports Club will kick off their 2023-24 I-League campaign with an away match against former champions Aizawl FC at RG Stadium on Saturday.

Head coach Samir Naik is determined to lead his team to a strong start, setting sights on securing a spot in the Indian Super League (ISL).

"We must stay focused and work hard to achieve the team’s goals this season," Naik said ahead of the match, emphasizing the importance of a good beginning. He is hopeful that Dempo can turn the corner and begin a strong run, which he believes is crucial for their ISL qualification ambitions.

Dempo will be without key defender Daniel and midfielder Necio Fernandes, who is recovering from a knee operation, adding to the challenge of the tough away fixture.

"It’s going to be a challenging match, but we’ll stay positive," Naik added. "Aizawl FC is a big team with passionate supporters, but when the whistle blows, it’s 50-50 on the field. We’re determined to bounce back from any early setbacks in the group stage, and with faith, we aim to win."

However, the club's fans have expressed frustration with the performance of some of the foreign players, especially following a disappointing 1-4 loss to Churchill Brothers FC in a recent friendly. Despite the concerns, Naik remains optimistic about the squad’s potential.

"We’re looking forward to achieving our ambitions with the full support of our Club President, Srinivas Dempo," said Naik. "Our goal is to achieve top results in the I-League this season."

Dempo, one of Goa’s most successful football clubs, has a record five I-League titles and a proud legacy to uphold. Naik, however, is keen to focus on the present and future, leaving past successes behind.

"My aim is to do well in the upcoming I-League, with the ultimate goal of winning the title and securing a place in the Indian Super League," Naik concluded, outlining his vision for the season ahead.

With a new season and fresh challenges ahead, Dempo will be looking to start strong and push for another title in a highly competitive league.
