Devesh Anand Naik from Ponda won the 1st Venkatesh & Sumati Shanbhag memorial all-Goa open rapid rolling trophy chess tournament organised by Mormugao Taluka Chess Association under the aegis of Goa Chess Association at St Theresa High School, Mangor Hill-Vasco.
The standard 8th student of Bhatikar Model High School-Margao, bagged the title in grand style. In all, 263 players from Goa including 64 rated players, took part.
Devesh beat all the opponents till the 8th round and required a draw in the last round, which he snatched from a higher seed Datta Kambli. Thus he remained unbeaten by scoring 8.5 from 9 rounds. In the 7th & 8th round, he beat top seed P M Kantak and 3rd seed Anirudh Parsekar (Mormugao), who finished runner-up due to his better tie-break score by outplaying Vivaan Ballikar of Salcete taluka in the last round with 8 points from 9 rounds. Parth Salvi of Bardez taluka also with 8 points, secured third position.
