It started as a regimen to reduce weight after much coaxing by her parents. But 12-year-old Tanushree Shandani is not only routinely beating her peers but excelling at the sport of her choice. The Vasco girl won thoroughly dominated the field to win a triple crown at the All Goa Sub Junior Ranking Badminton tournament held
at Mapusa.
In the tournament organised by Mapusa Shuttlers and Panjim Smashers Club at Peddem, Mapusa, Tanushree -- a class seven student of Vidya Mandir School -- won the girls titles in under-13 singles, under-15 singles and under-15 doubles categories. Tanushree emerged as the only girl to win the triple title in the tournament.
Her proud father Rakesh Shandani revealed that his daughter was overweight and the parents pushed her to take up sports as a measure to make her fitter.
“We are extremely proud of her determination and her willingness​ to accept this as a challenge. We also feel happy with the dedication and devotion that she has for badminton today and she is in love with this game now,”
Rakesh said.
“Tanushree has been training under coach Karan Shera and regularly practises at the SAG Indoor sports complex at Chicalim. She spends five hours daily practising badminton, two hours in the morning and three hours in the evening,” Rakesh added.
