 The Verna Higher Secondary blanked challengers St Xavier's Higher Secondary School, Mapusa 2-0 to win the State Under 17 Subroto Mukherjee inter-school football tournament organized by Directorate of Sports and Youth Affairs in the finals held at SAG artifical turf grounds, Fatorda on Monday. Fr Agnel led 1-0 at the breather.
Fr Agnel have developed a distinct pattern in their play, which allows them to take the opponents by storm.
Their counter-attacking style looks attractive with the breath-taking pace at which they play their game.
Meuton Fernandes entered the box, threatening to pull the trigger.
Fr Agnel have been getting better with every game in executing this plan and Monday was no exception.
Fr Agnel had couple of scoring opportunities but Meuton Fernandes and Stalen Lucas wasted from hand-shaking distance in the early moments of the game.
Fr Agnel's breakthrough came in the 30th minute when Brison Fernandes' well executed free kick eluded both the rival defence wall and goalkeeper to put his team in front.
A minute later, Fr Agnel had a narrow escape when Aloyssius Lobo blew away a sitter much to the dismay of Mapusa supporters.
Post resumption, Fr Agnel continued to enjoy the lion's share of exchanges.
Down by a first half goal, St Xavier's went all out in search of the equalizer and nearly found it but rival defender Aditya D'Cruz rose to the occasion and averted the danger by thwarting Hudson D'Mello.
St Xavier's conjured two scoring chances however Dinisio Trindade and Aloyssious Lobo missed out.
With three minutes remaining for the final whistle, striker Meuton Fernandes killed the contest with a glancing header off Royston Braganza and enjoyed the adulation of Fr Agnel supporters.
With this win, Fr Agnel will represent Goa in the All India Subroto Mukherjee Cup in New Delhi. In apost match chat, Fr Agnel Multipurpose HSS Physical Education teacher Ivan D'Sa said: "A victory is always great because you cannot take it for granted. Each game is important. But this triumph is sweeter as we made a maiden entry at the All India level."
