PANAJI

Goa's campaign in the Cooch Behar Trophy Elite Under-19 cricket tournament came to a disappointing end as they suffered an innings and 105-run defeat against Madhya Pradesh in the quarterfinal at the GCA ground in Sanguem.

After being bowled out for 164 in their first innings, Goa struggled to contain Madhya Pradesh, who amassed a commanding 390 in 121.5 overs. Resuming the second day on 321 for seven, Madhya Pradesh consolidated their advantage, with Pushkar Vishwakarma scoring a valuable 40 from the lower order. Prateek Shukla added 25 runs to his overnight unbeaten score, while Yuvraj Singh Kang was dismissed without adding to his tally. For Goa, Samarth Rane returned impressive figures of five for 76, supported by Chigurupati Venkat (four for 98).

Faced with a daunting first-innings deficit of 226 runs, Goass second-innings batting faltered under pressure. The team was bowled out for just 151 in 51 overs, sealing an innings defeat. Shaantanu Nevagi top-scored with 48, while Yash Kasvankar contributed 24 in a brief 48-run stand, the highest partnership of the innings. Sarthak Bhike (14) and Shiven Borkar (11 not out) were the only other batsmen to reach double figures. Madhya Pradesh spinner Manal Chauhan starred with the ball, claiming six wickets for just 31 runs to dismantle Goa's batting line-up.

With this comprehensive victory, Madhya Pradesh advanced to the semifinals, while Goa bowed out of the tournament after a challenging quarterfinal encounter.
