In a high-scoring quarter-final encounter of the 8th Martin’s Cup, St Rock Youth Club Calata defeated Navelim Villagers Union 7“4 to book a place in the semifinals of the Betalbatim Sporting Club tournament, played at the Panchayat Ground, Betalbatim, on Saturday.
The match was played at a fast pace from the outset, with both teams pressing hard for the lead. Goals flowed at regular intervals, keeping the crowd entertained as a total of 11 goals were scored in an action-packed contest.
Oscar Rodrigues was the star of the match for St Rock Calata, scoring a brilliant hat-trick in the 10th, 23rd and 50th minutes. Vonan D’Silva added a brace with goals in the 22nd and 42nd minutes, while Ashley Rodrigues (6th minute) and Ashley Mendes (45th minute) chipped in with one goal each.
For Navelim Villagers Union, Aliston Coelho, Mark Gomes, Travis Souza and Sam Pereira found the net in the 15th, 24th, 32nd and 40th minutes respectively.
St Rock Calata goalkeeper Fredy Fernandes produced an impressive performance, denying the opposition on three one-on-one occasions, while another effort struck the crossbar and went out of play.
For his outstanding performance and hat-trick, Oscar Rodrigues of St Rock Youth Club Calata was adjudged Man of the Match, an award presented by Michael Bevan D’Silva.
