The Goa Waste Management Corporation (GWMC) and the Goa State Pollution Control Board (GSPCB) carried out a joint drive on Saturday to stop illegal dumping of garbage along the bypass road at Navelim, near Mercado Mall.

The main aim of the drive was to curb dumping on village roadsides and to spread awareness about proper waste disposal among local residents.

During the drive, officials inspected the area, spoke to residents and passers-by, and explained the importance of scientific waste disposal. The team kept a close watch to prevent people from throwing garbage on the roadside.

Officials from GWMC and GSPCB also advised the Navelim Panchayat to strengthen door-to-door waste collection by appointing more workers. They suggested starting regular collection of wet waste across the entire panchayat area. These steps, they said, would help reduce illegal dumping and improve waste management in the village.

The drive received a positive response from the local community. Residents requested the authorities to conduct such enforcement and awareness programmes regularly in Navelim and nearby villages to keep the area clean.

Those present during the drive included Salcete Block Development Officer Adarsh Dessai, Saiel Kamat, Assistant Manager, GWMC, Siddhant Desai, Junior Environmental Engineer, GSPCB, Krupesh Dessai, Engineer, GWMC, Navelim Sarpanch Paulo Vicente Pereira, Navelim Panchayat Secretary Sandeep Halyali, PSI Swadesh Dessai and PC Rohan Naik.
