Goa earned their qualification to the semifinals with a game in hand after a 2-1 win over Odisha in their third Group A match of the Final Round of National Football Championship for Santosh Trophy 2018-19, played in Ludhiana, on Sunday.
Two early goals from Jessel Carneiro and Sarineo Fernandes sealed the tie for Goa, but they had to defend well to protect their lead later in the match after Odisha fought back through a goal by Arvin Lakra in the 54th minute. Goa’s qualification was confirmed after group leaders Services walloped Meghalaya 5-0 to knock the north-eastern state out of contention.
Services ended their group campaign with 10 points from their four games, winning their three games after they were held by Goa 1-1 in their opener. Goa have seven points from three matches (one draw, two wins), and play Meghalaya in their last group fixture on April 16. Services, who boosted their goal difference to +8 courtesy their big win, will likely progress as group toppers. Goa have a goal difference of +2 and will need a huge win against Meghalaya to eclipse the
current leaders.
Speaking on his team’s performance, Goa coach Samir Naik said his men have finally found the perfect rhythm in the competition. “I have been saying we have one of the best teams this time and the team is only getting better with every passing game. I am happy for this win which has set us through and I am happy for the boys who have given their hundred percent in the games,” Naik said.
Sarineo was the standout player for Goa and put the team ahead when he reacted quickly to tap in a rebound after Chaitan Komarpant’s shot was poorly handled by the opposition keeper. Veteran striker Joaquim Abracnhes kept on pressing the Odisha defence, which made them concede the second when midfielder Kirtikesh played Jessel through on goal and the Goa captain scored a classic out-foot shot that crashed into the nets to make
it 2-0.
Goa’s defence was rock solid throughout the game, especially Clement who with the help of his three defenders -- Brian, Sarineo and Meldon -- made it difficult for Odisha to break through. Goa’s keeper Tyson Caido made two first half saves to keep the scoreline, 2-0. However, Goa conceded in the second session as Lakra scored to give Odisha some hope. Goa then defended well to pocket the tree points and secure their passage to the semis.
“We are now concentrating on the final group match (against Meghalaya), which we have to winby a big margin in order to top the group. We will try and progress as group winners. I have faith in my boys and they can do it,” Naik said of their last
group challenge.
