Ahead of the upcoming National Games, Goa Forward Chief Vijai Sardesai has said the sports ministry should shift its perspective, saying it’s not just about winning medals; it's about nurturing a sense of pride and achievement among Goan and about celebrating Goan identity through sports and showcasing it to the world.
Sardesai took to the social media raise a thought-provoking question: "GOA JERSEYS DO NOT MAKE #GOEMKARS," expressing his best wishes for Goa's athletes. However, his tweet carried a poignant message, one that resonated deeply with many Goemkars as his disappointment was evident as he highlighted the recruitment of non-Goans to represent Goa in various sporting events.
“For Goans, the term "Goemkar" goes beyond a geographical identity; it embodies a cultural and emotional connection to the land and its people. Goa's identity is not just about picturesque landscapes; it's about the spirit of its inhabitants”, he said.
Saying that recruiting players from outside Goa might lead to short-term jubilation, he said it raises questions about the authenticity and depth of local talent.
“The emphasis here is on long-term programs that ensure Goan athletes receive consistent support, guidance, and resources to excel in their chosen sports”, he said, saying that sports should not be seen as annual events but as a lifelong commitment to excellence.
