LONDON
The Goan Association (UK) organised its annual badminton tournament at The Dome in Hounslow, Southall on April 29.
Participants from 20 counties across UK competed in four categories, men’s singles/doubles, women’s singles and mixed doubles. “It was an enjoyable, interesting day of badminton and a well-run tournament by GOA UK along with its volunteers demonstrating a spirit of competition and community,” said GOA UK Sports Director Savio D’Souza.
The winners in the different categories were Cruz Fernandes (Men Singles), Roma Braganza (Women Singles), Sean Rodrigues and Valentine Gonsalves (Men Doubles) and Cruz Fernandes and Nikki Fernandes (Mixed Doubles). The runners-up in the different categories were Kevin Neves (Men Singles), Freeda Gomes (Women Singles), Alex DSouza and Peter Fernandes (Men Doubles) and Kevin Neves and Freeda Gomes (Mixed Doubles).
“Looking ahead, GOA UK is focused on organising sports event to encourage community participation and development, therefore we have aligned our sports venues and calendar to allow a greater proportion of Goan's to attend events such as 6-a-side Football, a 2 or 3-a-side Tie breaker scheduled in June and July respectively, Volleyball to be held in August, followed by carrom, table tennis and a Men’s Body-Building competition exclusively in Swindon this November,” said Savio D’Souza.
