Goa Velha Sports Club’s winless streak continued as they were held to a 1-1 draw by Clube Sao Miguel de Taleigao Sports Club in Geno-GFA’S First Division League at SAG Artifical Turf, Fatorda on Wednesday. Both the goals came in the second half.
It was a game of missed chances and drama in front of the goal as Clube Sao Miguel de Taleigao made their intention clear from the start when striker Gautam Kankonkar misfired from close range after being fed by midfielder Pritesh Sawant. Earlier, Goa Velha Sports Club nearly broke the deadlock when Adolfo Caido unleashed a blistering shot, which was however parried away by Edwin Rodrigues. On the rebound, midfielder Fleming Dias’ snap-shot was blocked by Clube Sao Miguel goalkeeper.
Goa Velha Sports Club did not waste time in carving out their chances but striker Adolfo Caido’s snap-shot was thwarted by the rival defender off John Vaz. Goa Velha came close in foisting the lead when Arun Naik’s attempt was well-blocked by the rival goalkeeper.With the time running out, Clube Sao Miguel de Taleigao nearly struck when Joylan Viegas’ try was well-fisted away by the rival goalkeeper.
Post resumption, Clube Sao Miguel de Taleigao dominated possession for better part of the first half but, could not create any clear-cut chance in the initial period.Goa Velha meanwhile, came close to surging ahead soon after the resumption, when Adolfo Cardozo’s attempt nearly produced the desired result.
Clube Sao Miguel de Taleigao’s breakthough came in the 58th minute when Niraj Shirodkar beat rival goalkeeeper Joseph Rodrigues off Gautam Kankonkar’s assist.Spurred by the sucesss, Taleigao upped the tempo of the game and created scoring chances but midfielder Valentino Nazareth could not convert the chances that fell into his path. At the other end, in the 82nd minute, Goa Velha Sports Club neutralised the lead when Arun Naik was brought down by rival defender Raju inside the penalty box. Referee Jose Rebello pointed to the spot and Francis Fernandes convereted the spot kick to put his team on equal terms.
