The 1st edition of the Governor Cup Women’s Karate Championship was held on July 28 at Peddem Sports Complex, Mapusa. The Championship was organised by the Directorate of Sports & Youth Affairs at the initiative of Raj
Bhavan, Goa.
The Traditional Karate Association of Goa “ an affiliated member of the National Federation - Karate Association of India, conducted the championship. State Governor Mridula Sinha was the chief guest, while the other dignitaries present were: Ram Kripal Sinha, special guest, J Ashok Kumar (IAS) “ Secretary Sports, Rupesh Kumar Thakur (IAS) “ Secretary to Governor, V M Prabhu Dessai “ Director of Sports & Youth Affairs, Suraj M Caculo - TKAG President, Gurudas R Vernekar “ Asst Director Sports, Jennifer Ferrao E Gonsalves “ Asst Director Physical Education North.
The one-day event was followed by the prize distribution ceremony. A total of 404 players, under the age category of 14/17/19 years, from 102 schools across the State of Goa competed at the Championship.
Apart from awarding medals and merit certificates, the Governor presented the winners with cash reward of Rs 5000 for gold medal, Rs 3000 for silver medal and Rs 2000 each for bronze medals. Schools that earned the highest points on medals were presented the Governor Cup in each age category.
