Guardian Angel Sports Club proved once again they were too good for Football Club de Bardez as they drubbed the North Goan side 5-0 in the Goa Football Association’s Professional League match here on Wednesday. Nicholas Rodrigues opened the floodgates, with Yakubu Mohammed, Perryson Rebello, Abel Hammond and Nicolau Colaco then adding their names to the scoresheet for the South Goan club.
After today’s win, Angels climbed to the fifth position with 23 points from 16 matches, while Bardez remain on 17 points from 18 matches.
After his team drew against Churchill Brothers in the last match, Bardez coach Climax Lawrence brought in three changes into the starting line-up as Viraj Naik, Gaurav Vaigankar and Lalbabu Matho replaced Jessel Carneiro, Krishnath Shirodkar and Clinto Niasso. The Angels, who had drubbed Bardez 6-0 in their last match, started with the same squad.
Angels dominated right from the starting whistle and scored at regular intervals. They missed an early chance to score when Bardez defence blundered in clearing Nigerian striker Yakubu Mohammed’s cross from the right. However, the resultant attempt hit the goalpost before the ball went out of play. Minutes later, Angel’s Nicholas Rodrigues set up Aniston Fernandes inside the penalty box, but the latter with just Bardez goalkeeper David Chauhan to beat, was late to get hold of the ball.
After couple of missed chances, Angels surged ahead in the 38th minute when Nicholas Rodrigues let go a blistering strike from 35-yards which hit the bottom of the crossbar and crashed inside the goalline.
Just five minutes later, Guardian Angel further consolidated their lead through Yakubu as the Nigerian front-man calmly finished the move after receiving a long-ball from Nicolau Colaco from the right flank.
Bardez lost a glorious chance to pull a goal back in the added time of the first session when Inacio Colaco found Stany Braganza in the box, but the forward saw his header miss the target by a whisker.
Four minutes on resumption of play, Angel pumped in their third goal. Clifton Dias sent an intelligent through-pass to Perryson Rebello, who moved some steps forward and scored (3-0).
Defender Nicolau Colaco, would have added his name to the scorers’ list in the 72nd minute when he directed his header off Nicholas Rodrigues corner on target, however, Bardez goalkeeper David brilliantly fisted it over the crossbar.
In the 78th minute, Bardez defender Viraj brought down Yakubu in the penalty box, where referee without any hesitation pointed to the dreaded spot. Ghanaian striker Abel Hammond then scored from the spot to make it 4-0.
Ten minutes later, the Angels scored their fifth goal. Nicolau Colaco’s header from close range off Aniston’s well-taken corner, had no answer from rival goalie David.
