Great goalkeeping by keeper Rosario Monteiro and fine display of accurate shooting by Raju Cardozo in the forward line helped hosts SCC Cavelossim Veterans ‘A” to down a fighting Seraulim Veterans 2-1 and storm into the finals of Nazazianho Memorial Veterans football for Benaulim constituency organised by Santa Cruz Club of Cavelossim and played at Club’s Fr Druston and Wellington Ground Cavelossim.
In a fast paced encounter, Seraulim Veterans played a good positional game with Captain Sandeep Shanke feeding the forwards with some accurate passes and in one case, Camilo Ferrao’s stiff grounder was parried by alert Rosario Monteiro under Cavelossim goal for an abortive corner.
However much against the run of play, Steven Fernandes in a desperate effort to block a power packed shot taken by Agnelo Passainhas, conceded a corner and Charles Rodrigues who took the corner floated the ball to unmarked Raju Cardozo, who headed in the first goal.
After lemon break, Seraulim kept the pressure on Cavelossim but Sheriff and Cipriano Da Costa in the deep defence thwarted every effort of Seraulim to restore parity. However, five minutes from time Seraulim’s outstanding player Steven Fernandes dribbled past Charles shot into goal but Rosario was quick to block the shot and the ball fell at the feet of Henry Fernandes who made no mistake to equalise for Seraulim.
When the game looked to be heading for the tiebreaker Lawry Fernandes gave a long pass to Sheriff who deftly controlled the ball and gave a top pass to Raju Cardozo who headed the ball into the nylons for his brace and a place for the hosts in the finals on July 3.
