At stumps on the second day on Wednesday, the hosts were 94/1. Opener Swapnil Asnodkar was unbeaten on 28, while captain and No. 3 batsman Sagun Kamat remained not out on 32 runs.
Goa began their reply in an attacking manner. Sumiran Amonkar and Swapnil opened the innings for the hosts. Sumiran was particularly aggressive on the Punjab bowlers, in the absence of star pacer Sandeep Sharma and Barinder Sran, as he dealt mostly in boundaries.
Sumiran made 30 runs off 34 deliveries, cracking six
boundaries in his short stay at the crease before he was out caught by wicket-keeper Abhishek Gupta off the bowling of Siddharth Kaul. The first-wicket partnership was worth 49 runs.
Swapnil is batting patiently with his 28 runs coming off 84 balls, while his partner Sagun has faced 56 balls for his 32 runs so far. Both these experienced batsmen have hit four boundaries each. With two days' play remaining, Goa will be hoping that Swapnil and Sagun make big scores on the third day and take the hosts to safety.
Earlier, Shadab Jakati picked up 13th five-wicket haul of his First-Class cricket career, but Punjab were successful in posting a mammoth first-innings total of 635 runs. Shadab, who will celebrate his 37th birthday next month, showed that he is still Goa's premier wicket-taking spinner as he took five wickets against the strong Punjab batting line-up.
The Vasco-based bowler, who made his Ranji debut in 1998/99 season, bowled the highest number of overs of any bowler in the side, and his figures read 46-7-165-5. With another five-for to his name, Shadab's total First-class tally goes to 275 scalps. Darshan Misal and Amogh Desai picked up a wicket each, while medium-pacer Rituraj Singh had scalped both the wickets to fall on the first day.
Anmolpreet Singh was the first man to be dismissed in the morning as he was run out after adding just 10 runs to his overnight score of 103 runs. This also brought to an end, the third-wicket partnership with Captain Jiwanjot Singh, who was not out overnight on 215. Their stand was worth 260 runs. Jiwanjot departed soon after, having added another 23 runs to his double century before he was out for 238, caught by Swapnil Asnodkar off the bowling of Desai, with the total reading 444.
Gurkeerat Mann then took centre stage and scored a superb ton, scoring 114 runs off 129 deliveries, studded with 14 boundaries and two sixers. He was one of the victims of left-arm spinner Jakati, who also claimed the wickets of Abhishek Gupta, Taruwar Kohli, Manpreet Gony and
Siddharth Kaul.
