Mae Dos Pobres High School, Nuvem registered a 2-0 win over Marina English High School, Verna to enter the pre-quarterfinals of Salcete Taluka Under 17 Subroto Mukherjee inter-school football tournament, organized by Directorate of Sports and Youth Affairs at SAG Artificial Turf Grounds, Fatorda on Monday.

Rollan Noronha sounded the warning in the early moments of the game when he received the ball from Nizamudin Pathan and the former outwitted two rival defenders “ Antush Moniz and Brito Pereira and former unleashed a snap shot which was brilliantly saved by Verna school goalkeeper in the very 7th minute of the game. Nuvem team had a golden chance to surge ahead but Kamlesh Naik shot wide much to the dismay of Mae dos Pobres bench. Gleson Fernandes missed the easiest chance of the day when he headed downwards and the ball was easily collected by Verna goalkeeper. Post resumption, Mae dos Pobres came out with renewed ideas and their forwards harassed the rival defenders with some stiff shots. Joel Ferrao and Seldon Pereira worked in unison and to essayed defence-spitting passes inside the rival penalty box. Pobres’ breakthrough came in the 37th minute when Seldon Pereira punished the rival goalkeeper with clinical finish. Spurred by the lead, Pobres High School upped the ante and intensified their attacks and doubled the lead in the 55th minute when Zenididian Colaco unleashed a fine shot that beat the rival goalkeeper hands down.rIn other matches, Our Lady of Health high school Cuncolim blanked Bhatikar Model English High School, Margao 4-0. Cuncolim School netted through Trian D’Costa, Ronaldo Simoes, Dylan Fernandes and Ashwin D’Souza. rBethany Convent HS Areal got the better of Infant Jesus High School, Cuncolim 2-1. Stalen Oliveira and Valancio D’Costa netted for Bethany Convent while the lone goal for Infant Jesus High School was netted by Ravi Gurkha.
