Models-Panaji blanked Carmel Girls-Curtorim 2-0 to cruise into the semi-finals of all-Goa CRC Women’s Cup football tournament organised by CRC Chinchinim at Chinchinim on Wednesday. All goals came in the first half. Models will meet Canacona Sports Academy in the semi-finals on Thursday.
Models dominated the game right from the word go and had couple of scoring chances but their forwards squandered from hand-shaking distance. Models nearly broke the deadlock in the 5th minute when Khushboo Saundatikar outwitted a rival defender but found the side-netting. Models had a golden chance to surge ahead when promising striker Sushmita Jadhav picked up the ball from her own half, but missed from a hand-shaking distance.
Models comprising of Khushboo and Sushmita, were thorn in the rival defence’s flesh, as the duo had a free run into the rival penalty box and unleashed a flurry of attacks. However, their forwards muffed sitters from a close range.
Models broke the deadlock when prolific striker Sushmita beat her markers and her blistering shot brushed the hand of rival goalkeeper Samantha Fernandes before rolling into the net, in the 12th minute.
All attempts of a comeback from Carmel Girls were thwarted by the Panaji team defenders. At the other end, Models had umpteen scoring chances but Sushmita and Karen Costa failed to get past rival goalkeeper Samantha Fernandes. With one minute left for half time, Keenda D’Souza scored the insurance goal off an assist from Sujita Murgaonkar.
Post resumption, Models continued to enjoy the lion’s share of exchanges and pushed their opponents on the back foot.However they could not add to their tally due to poor finishing.
