Kerala Blasters FC dominated their Indian Super League game against Chennaiyin FC at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Kochi on Saturday evening but were also wasteful in the 1-1 draw, leaving caretaker coach Trevor Morgan disappointed.
Kerala came into the match on the back of four successive defeats and when Josu stepped up to take a penalty in the second half with the score tied at 1-1, it appeared they will finally break the losing streak. However, he was thwarted by Chennai goalkeeper Karanjit Singh. Speaking to the media after the game, Morgan said: “It is a disappointing result because we missed a lot of chances that we ourselves created. There were a lot of opportunities created. Chris Dagnall scored a beautiful goal from a cross, the attack was happening today.”
Elano scored for Chennaiyin in the first half after Sandesh Jhingan brought down Stiven Mendoza in the box vying for a cross. When asked was the decision by the referee spot on, Morgan said: “I haven't seen it myself but I know that Jinghan had his hands around him in the box and that is not supposed to happen inside the penalty box. Sandesh is a young player and a top player and he will get over it.”
However, Morgan was proud that his boys managed to keep a very strong side like Chennaiyin under the pump all through the match. “As far as the chances for Chennai are concerned, [Stephen] Bywater just once made a beautiful save from Elano’s shot. Apart from that there was no other real threat from Chennai and the boys should be proud of the way they played today,” Morgan said.
Kerala, who continue propping up the table with five points from seven matches, now hosts FC Pune City on Wednesday.
