Mount Mary's High School, Chinchinim put up an impressive performance as they prevailed over favourites Our Lady of Health High School, Cuncolim 3-2 to emerge champions in the Union of Chinchinim Villagers Junior Cup Under-14 inter-school football tournament organised by Union of Chinchinim Villagers at Church grounds, Chinchinim on Saturday. Both the teams were tied 1-1 at full time.
Mount Mary's broke the deadlock in the 10th minute when striker Roven Rodrigues slotted past the rival goalkeeper with a snapshot off a pass from Henry beating the Cuncolim goalkeeper Clinton Fernandes hands down. Unfazed, OL of Health upped their ante and found the equaliser in the 18th minute when Mydon Menezes bulged the net.
Post resumption, both the teams played attacking football. With time running out, both teams went all out in search of the match-winner but failed to get past the rival rearguard. In the ensuing tie-breaker, Melroy Fernandes and Pinoy Borkar found the mark for Mount Mary's while Rovan Rodrigues converted for Our Lady of Health.
Mount Mary's were richer by Rs 7,000 and a glittering trophy while Our Lady of Health had to settle for Rs 5,000 and a trophy.
Martino Pereira, ex-headmster of Mount Mary's HS, Chinchinim distributed the medals to both the teams. Greg Noronha former physical education teacher was the guest of honour. Earlier, Joe Menny Furtado, president of Union of Chinchinim Villagers welcomed the guests. Charlton Furtado, secretary proposed the vote of thanks. Carlos Fernandes compered.
