The Government has approved Rs 230 crore for creation and refurbishment of infrastructure for the conduct of the premier multi-sport extravaganza, for the first time in Goa. The further cost adding up to the proposed total of Rs 445, has been held back for review by Chief Minister and Chairman of Sports Authority of Goa, Manohar Parrikar, during the AGM, at Porvorim on Friday night.
The status of the cycling velodrome proposed to be constructed at Fatorda, is also in abeyance. A committee co
mprising a SAG official and experienced State sports association administrators, has been asked to work out the logistics of the accommodation for the athletes and officials, who are likely to total above 10,000, coming to Goa for National Games.
During the AGM, it was resolved that Jivabadada Kerkar awards, which were pending from 2002-2013-14 for sportspersons and 1999-2014 for sports organisers, will be presented this year on December 18. Total 30 awardees, which comprise 22 sportspersons, will be honoured with the State award, for which the government has asked the respective committee, to select the candidates for the subsequent four years, soon.
A committee has been constituted under the chairmanship of the Chief Minister, Sports Minister Babu Ajgaonkar, SAG Executive Director V M Prabhudesai to work out modalities of classification of sports/associations for grants allocation and manpower utilisation in sports department and SAG. Cash awards to sportspersons and one-time assistance pattern, have been approved with a special provision, as instructed by the Chief Minister.
Sports merit marks will now be included in percentage when a student is falling short of the cut-off percentage of admission to colleges where there are no special entrance tests to qualify, and polytechnics. These marks will continue to be added to percentage when a student is failing without them.
The Goa Board had recently decided to keep the sports merit marks separately without adding to the total, based on CBSE guidelines. The AGM, however, raised their voice against the ruling, and the board agreed partly to their demand. Nevertheless, those going for professional degree courses will have no use of sports merit marks as they have separate entrance tests to secure admission.
Other decisions taken at the AGM are: Staff of SAG who have completed five years in daily-wage mode, will be regularised; Honorarium for staff at Nehru Stadium, Fatorda for assisting in conduct of FIFA U-17 World Cup at Fatorda; Goa teams going for nationals in North East States to be allocated air travel; Campal swimming pool machinery, plumbing, electrical to be revamped; coaching centre for chess to be set up in Goa.
