Navelim Sporting Club snatched a 1-0 victory against Curtorim Gymkhana with a second half goal from striker Aulon Gomes to win the All Goa Martins Cup inter village football tournament, organised by Betalbatim Sporting Club, at Village Panchayat ground, Betalbatim on
Sunday.
Navelim Sporting began in attacking fashion but Curtorim Gymkhana were solid in defence at the back, denying the opposition any clear opening. The first half saw many attacking moves from either side but the attackers didn’t have any precise opportunities at goal.
In the second half, Navelim Sporting pressed harder and the match winner came in the 58th minute when striker Aulon Gomes nodded home off a cross, giving no chance to the rival goalkeeper. Down 0-1, Curtorim Gymkhana employed more men upfront in their quest for a leveller but the Navelim defenders did enough to keep their slender lead intact.
Navelim Sporting bagged a cash prize of Rs 50,000 and the winners trophy, while Curtorim Gymkhana cashed in Rs Rs 40,000 with the runners-up trophy.Minister for Panchayats, Mauvin Godinho was the chief guest and gave away the prizes in the prsence of Nuvem MLA Wilfred D’Sa. Savio Alemao, RK Singh, president of RKS Associates, and special invitees, Rev Fr Pascoal Afonso, Parish Priest of Betalbatim church, Fr Peter Fernandes, Assistant Parish Priest of Betalbatim church, and Constancio Miranda, sarpanch of VP Betalbatim, and Anthony Pango, GFA VP-South Goa were also present for the prize presentation function. Carafina Pereira, the proprietor of Martins Corner presided.
