Navelim Villagers Union beat Rossman Cruz Nagoa Verna 1-0 to emerge champions of Late Joao Francisco and Luiza Pacheco Cup football tournament, organised by Betalbatim SC at Betalbatim Sports Complex, on Sunday. Danstan Fernandes scored the only goal of the match in the second half.
Navelim Villagers Union made the first attacking move when Fr Americo Rodrigues sent a long ball to Jaison Martins, who was kept in check by rival defender Clive Coelho, in the 10th minute.
The Nagoa team’s first good move came in the 16th minute when Josley Moniz forced a save from goalkeeper Selvin Gomes. Nagoa attacked through Savio Fernandes and Josley Moniz but their tries were blocked by the Navelim goalkeeper.
The second half turned livelier as the teams went for the goal. That strike finally arrived in the 67th minute when Danstan Fernandes beat the rival goalkeeper with a
stiff shot.
Navelim Vilagers Union took home a cash prize of Rs 50,000 and the winners trophy, while Rossman Cruz Nagoa bagged Rs 40,000
and a trophy.
Adv Radharao Gracias was the chief guest and gave away the prizes to the winners and runners-up in the presence of Dr Jorson Fernandes, president of UGDP. Viola Pacheco, Fr Pascoal Afonso, parish priest of Betalbatim; Constancio Miranda, Sarpanch of Betalbatim; Micky Pacheco, former Tourism minister were the other dignitaries present on the dais.
