DULER
Panjim Footballers silenced in-form Guardian Angel Sports Club with a resounding 4-0 win in the GFA Goa Professional League at Duler Stadium, here on Tuesday.
Snedden Rodrigues netted a brace, while Clive Miranda and Sachidanand Satelkar added one goal each for the Capital city side. From the win, Panjim Footballers climbed to the 8th place with 18 points from 19 matches, while Angel remained in the 3rd position with 33 points from 21 outings.
Ghanaian front man Abel Hammond was back in the starting XI for the Curchorem side, who had blanked Goan FC in their last match, while Panjim coach Savio Vaz brought in Clive Miranda, Velton D’Souza and Snedden Rodrigues following their 4-2 defeat at the hands of Vasco SC in the last match.
Panjim colts would have scored in the very 2nd minute when Angel U-20 defender Mizio Peixoto’s clearance off Panjim striker Snedden’s cross hit the crossbar and went for a corner. However, in the 11th minute, Panjim defender Clive Miranda put his team ahead when he smartly headed in off
Egyptian midfielder Fady Riad’s fine cross from the edge of the box to make it 1-0 for the Capital city side.
Hardly had the celebrations ended, Panjim extended their lead in the 23rd minute when Snedden smartly headed at the far post from 6 yards off Egyptian Fady’s perfect cross from the right, making it 2-0. Angel should have pulled a goal in the 28th minute when Nigerian forward Yakubu Mohammad dribbled past a defender and latched a fierce shot from just inside the box but Panjim custodian Gurpreet Singh made a brilliant block to keep his slate clean.
Four minutes later, Panjim increased their lead when Snedden’s blistering shot from the top of the box, off Congo midfielder Alphonse Shako, entered the top corner of the goal to make it 3-0. At the other end, Angel exerted pressure on the rival citadel but Panjim defenders along with their keeper did not yield under pressure.
On resumption of play, Angel had two golden opportunities to get back into the match. Substitute Nicholas Rodrigues sent a fine corner to Clifton Dias in the box, who headed on the goal but Panjim keeper Gurpreet dived to his right to push it for a corner. Another glorious chance went in vain in the 60th minutewhen they were awarded a penalty kick after Panjim defender Clive brought down Aniston Fernandes in the box but to everyone’s dismay, Nicholas Rodrigues shot wide from the spot.
Snedden had a chance to complete his hat trick in the 79th minutes when he easily dribbled past two defenders and shot on the goal but it hit the side post and went out. Panjim’s hunger for goals did not end as they hammered in their fourth goal at the end of the regulation time, when substitute Sachidanand Satelkar snatched the ball from Angel defender Sanwil D’Costa and shot past Angel keeper Ram Sroop from inside the box, 4-0.
Goan FC hold SCC Cavelossim
In the other Pro League match played at Duler Stadium under floodlights, Goan Football Club came from a goal down to hold Santa Cruz Club of Cavelossim to an entertaining 1-1 draw.
The young Gaurs were the better side in the entire match with better possession and attacking index. After a goalless first half, Cavelossim opened their account in the 75th minute when Michael Silva’s header off Moises D’Sa corner finished in the top corner to make it 1-0 for the South Goan Club. However, in the 85th minute, Gaurs defender Brian Faria’s scorching volley from close found the net to make it all square for his side.
