Panjim surprise Guardian Angel

DULER
New entrants Panjim Footballers surprised Guardian Angel Sports Club by registering a 2-0 win in the Goa Professional League, organised by Goa Football Association, played at Duler Stadium, on Sunday.
After the impressive result, the Panaji side moved up to the 7th position with 9 points while, Angels stay on 4th position with 14 points from 10 matches.
Panjim after their defeat at the hands of Goan Football Club saw their coach Savio Vaz bring in two changes in his starting line-up by fielding de
fender Clive Miranda and midfielder Pisco Moura. At the other end, Angels in-charge Riston Rodrigues chose to continue with the winning combination which earned him full points against Calangute Association in the last round match.
The visitors from Curchorem started on an attacking note and dominated the first session but their strikers squandered the chances they had in front of the goal. Their newly signed Nigerian striker Yakubu Mohammed, who stole the limelight on his debut against Calangute by scoring and assisting in the second goal and creating a number of chances for his team-mates, was in poor touch on Sunday. Two of the chances he had in the first session, the Nigerian failed to convert.
In the 34th minute Clifton Dias sent an intelligent lob to Yakubu but surprisingly the latter shot wide from close quarters. Four minutes later, he had another opportunity with just the rival keeper at his mercy, but this time he once again shot skywards.
At the other end, Panjim would have surged ahead when Clive superbly headed towards the goal off Pinto's corner but Angles' U-20 midfielder Louie Noronha came up with a goal-line clearance to deny them the goal.
On crossing ends, the Panaji side came up with renewed ideas and scored twice. In the 50th minute, Velton D'Souza collected a through pass from Prisco and, after beating the onrushing rival Angels keeper, scored at the far corner of the goal to make it 1-0. Down by a goal, Angels coach Riston Rodrigues made two quick changes by bringing from the bench striker Abel Hammond and midfielder Rayman Fernandes, replacing Louie and Aniston Fernandes, which however did not pay any dividend.
It was the Panaji outfit that moved ahead confidently with a one-goal cushion and should have doubled their lead when Clifton Fernandes sent a neat pass to Akeraj Martin, who had only the keeper to beat but shot over the crossbar. However, it did not take them too long to score again as just four minutes later, Panjim midfielder Mahesh Kumar getting hold of a pass from his team-mate Clifton made it 2-0 when he sent a scorching right-footer which crashed into the back of the nylons beating Angel's keeper hands down.
Angels outfit in spite of having two foreigners on the pitch, failed to create much impact in the match while their rivals, especially the Panjim defence lead by Clive and Schubert D'Costa along with Kunal Kundaikar and Prasil Kankonkar, did a commendable job to restrict Nigerian Yakubu and Able from scoring.
