Salgaocar FC registered a resounding 8-3 win over Santa Cruz Club of Cavelossim in the 18th round match of the Goa Football Association Professional League at Duler Stadium, here on Friday.
It was Nigerian Yinka Joel Sunday who did most of the damage as he scored four goals, with U-20 player Devendra Murgaonkar scoring a hat-trick, after Gilbert Oliveira had scored the opening goal for the Green Brigade. At the other end, Samson Simoes netted a brace and a goal from Mathew Colaco enabled Cavelossim reduce the margin. After today’s match, Salgaocar stay on third position with 23 points from 14 matches, while SCC Cavelossim remained on 11th position with 7 points from 13 matches.
The Green Brigade tasted success in the 17th minute through their skipper Gilbert Oliveira who getting hold of a through pass from Mackroy Peixote, finished the move with a stiff grounder at the first post.
A few minutes later, U-20 forward Devendra Murgaonkar doubled Salgaocar’s lead when his flick header off Gilbert’s corner crashed into the goal, 2-0. As the match progressed, Yinka Joel Sunday hammered two more goals in the 28th and 36th minutes with a firm header and a neat placement (4-0).
It did not take long for the Green Brigade to net in their fifth goal when Devendra collected a pass from Mackroy and scored his brace with his strike going past goalkeeper Razak’s outstretched hands (5-0).
Cavelossim caught the Salgaocar defence napping where skipper Mathew Colaco dribbled past two rival defenders and unleashed a grounder at far post, past goalkeeper S. Rajini Kumar (5-1).
Salgaocar did not allow their opponents further breathing space as in the 45th minute, Devendra completed his hat-trick when he executed an easy tap-in from close off Gilbert’s square pass from inside the box.
On crossing ends, Salgaocar’s hunger for goals did not end as Joel Sunday also completed his hat-trick as he dribbled past two defenders and placed the ball home from the top of the box to make it 7-1 for the Greens. A few minutes later, Sunday hammered in his fourth goal.
