Raia Sporting down Navelim Villagers to lift St Anne’s title

Raia Sporting Club, Raia defeated Navelim Villagers Union 3-0 in the finals of 29th All Goa St Anne's Festival inter-village soccer 2017 organized by Ponda Footballers in association with SAG and Quadros Company at Animal Husbandry grounds Curti-Ponda on Sunday.

Raia took a two-goal lead through Melvin Gauncar and Oilex Oliveira within 9th minutes before Navelim could settle down. Towards the end of the second half, Oilex Oliveira increased the lead. Raia held an upper hand but Navelim came strong in the second half. Melvin Gauncar who is 5 feet tall delighted the crowd with his dribbling skills and off the ball movement.
Raia took the lead in the 4th minute as Melvin got the ball in the left flank and dribbled the winger back and defender and his shot kissed the inside of the goalpost to enter the goal to make it 1-0. Navelim tried to reorganize but in the 9th minute Melvin released a well-measured pass to Oilex who's first time shot beat Navelim keeper to make it 2-0. Against run of play Navelim nearly equalised as Covan Lawrence's long ranger shot missed the goalpost by an inch. In the resultant corner-kick Clinton header was punched out by Raia keeper Guilerme.
The second half was equally balanced as both teams used the flanks to attack and Navelim made the first move as Covan released a pass on the flanks to Americo whose chip was headed by Aldrich but Raia keeper saved. To reduce the margin Navelim took a long ranger shot but the ball flew wide of the goal. In the 78th minute, Raia's Johnny gave a through ball to Oilex who dribbled a defender and shot into the goal to make the issue safe in laying their hands on the trophy.
Ponda Footballers were felicitated at the hands of Adv Narendra Savoikar MP of South Goa. Upcoming footballer Fleming Alex Dias, who represented Goa Under-17 in 2014 was feted with cash prize and certificate.
In the Girls exhibition match, Rosary Higher Secondary came from behind to defeat Carmel Higher Secondary 5-4 via penalty after the match ended in a 1-1 draw. NKGSB Bank Manager of Ponda branch Amogh Hegde gave away the trophy and cash prize to Rosary HSS while social worker Gokuldas Gaoncar gave away the runners-up prize to Nuvem HSS.
Following prizes were awarded: Melvin Gauncar(Raia)- player of the tournament;Oilex Oliveire (Raia)- player of the finals.
