Salgaocar FC prevail in game of missed chances

Salgaocar Football Club Juniors came from behind to defeat Curtorim Gymkhana 4-2 in the Geno GFA First Division League at SAG Artificial Turf, Fatorda on Saturday. The teams were tied 1-1 at half time.  

Curtorim Gymkhana made a confident start and they matched up to Salgaocar Juniors well, be it midfield or the defence. Curtorim Gymkhana created many chances but their finishing let them down. 

Salgaocar were left shaken in the 20th minute when defender Roque Borges slotted past the Greens goalkeeper Dipanjan Debnath with a snap shot. Salgaaocar Juniors responded well, pressing hard for the equaliser and finally found it in the first half injury time when Ronaldo Olveira converted a spot kick. The Greens were awarded the penalty after Ronaldo was brought down inside the box by Curtorim Gymkhana defender Allister Costa.  

Post resumption, Rollwin Almeida scored in the 48th minuute when he beat the rival goalkeeper with a neat finish off midfielder Chaitan Komparpant’s assist. Spurred by the lead, Salgaocar upped the ante and Chaitan punted the ball to the far corner off a Stephen Satarkar pass in the 70th minute to make it 3-1. 

Curtorim Gymkhana intensfied their attacks after falling behind and had a chance to reduce the deficit when rival goalkeeper fouled a player during an aerial challenge and conceded a penalty. Roque Borges’ spot kick was however saved by Salgaocar goalkeeper. But Curtorim got their reducer from a spot kick after Liston Fernandes sent the rival goalkeeper the wrong way to convert. 

At the fag end, it was Salgaocar’s turn to miss a penalty. The spot kick was awarded after striker Ronado was brought down by a rival defender but Jovan Dias’ try was saved by Curtorim Gymkhana goalkeepeer Shubham Naik. However, Ronaldo sealed the rivals’ fate in in the stoppage time when he took advantage of a mistake by rival defender Aggio Antao and slammed the ball into the net to register his brace, 4-2.
