Mumbai’s Sherwin Rodrigues emerged winner of the 16th all-India Open Scrabble tournament, organised by the Scrabble Association of Goa, at the PCCE College Hall, Verna from April 26-28.

Three days of intense competitiveness of word wizardry spanned 24 games with 48 players from across the country participating in the event. The title went down to the wire with Sherwin Rodrigues (Mumbai) battling it out for the top position on the first board against the veteran Varisht Hingorani (Mumbai) in a must-win game to eventually prevail.

Rodrigues finished with 17 wins and a healthy spread of +1376 to successfully defend his title, while Hingorani (17, +374) had to be content with the second place, with Nakul Prabhu (also Mumbai) coming third (16, +1256).

The others top finishers (4-10): Douglas Lobo, Goa (16, +878), Sudhir Kamath, Delhi (15.5, +359), Yash Potnis, Mumbai (15, +1258), Sanjoy Gupta, Bengaluru (14.5, +954), Rajiv Antao, Goa (14.5, +524), Mangala Bhandarkar, Pune (14.5, +84), Udayan Grover, Pune (14, +855).   The next big scrabble draw in the State will be the WESPA championship to be held at Peddem Sports Complex, Mapusa

in October.
