Sporting wallop Panjim to enter semis

Sporting Clube de Goa registered an easy 6-0 win over Panjim Footballers to seal a semis spot in the Goa Sevens Premier League, organised by Goa Sevens and Ambelim Sports Club in association with Goa Football Association (GFA) at Ambelim Sports Complex, on Sunday.   

Mauvin Borges came off from the bench to score a hat-trick, while Marcus Mascarenhas, Sunny Fernandes and Alesh Savant scored one each.   

The Sporting team came into the game off two big wins in the league phase against Goan FC and Guardian Angel SC. While the Panjim Footballers, won one game against Vasco SC but lost to Dempo SC in the league phase. The Pro league champs were quick to open their tally six minutes into the game after Marcus Mascarenhas’s cross failed to connect to Cajetan Fernandes inside but it found Alesh Sawant who neatly tapped it in to give the Flaming Oranje a 1-0 lead.   

The Panjim side looked strong with winger Kunal Kundaikar running down the flanks but the capital side were denied entry into the box. The Sporting came close to scoring their second goal after Marcus placed in a curling cross to Cajetan but the later failed to control the ball as it went out of play.   

Alesh missed in another close tap in as the keeper of the Panjim Footballers was quick to clear. Substitute Mauvin Borges came on field for the Oranje side and was quick to mark his name by scoring a wonderful shot. He made no mistake to complete his brace by shooting on an open target as the Sporting side took a 3-0 lead. Gautam Dias came close to scoring for the Panjim team but his powerful long ranger went inches high from the cross bar as the Sporting side went into the lead 3-0.   

Moving over, the Panjim side came close to scoring Darry Costa and Snedden Rodrigues but the two failed to find the back of the nets. But nothing seemed to have been scoring the top contenders as Mauvin Borges ran into the box from midfield and placed a tap cross to Marcus who neatly placed it into the nets, 4-0. Mauvin Borges completed a hat trick by swiftly moving into the danger area and placing his perfect left footer into the nets, 5-0.   

Sunny Fernandes added another late goal for the Sporting side as the registered a 6-0 win over the Capital side to move into the last four of the tournament.
