St Anthony’s Sports Club, Colva made short work of Maina Sports Club 2-0 to move into the quarter-finals of All Goa Cana Benaulim Panchayat Cup inter village football tournament, organised by St Sebastian Union Club, Benaulim at St John the Baptist Ground, Dando Benaulim on Monday.
Maina had a good chance in the second minute but striker Veron Fernandes shot wide with only the rival goalkeeper to beat. At the other end, St Anthony’s had a great opportunity to surge ahead when defender Maxon Fernandes sent a long ball to Sweeden Rodrigues inside the rival penalty box but he blasted wide from close range.
A couple of minutes later, St Anthony’s breakthrough came in the 16th minute when Cliffton Dias unleashed a blistering right footer which beat rival goalkeeper Johnson Bhagat. Post resumption, Maina put up an improved display but their efforts were thwarted by the Colva defenders. In the 50th minute, Manjoy Rodrigues made it 2-0 off an assist from Baptist Fernandes.
St Anthony SC Colva will now meet Goa Velha SC in the quarter-finals on June 8.
