St Joseph's HS Calangute triumphs in Don Bosco inter-school football

St. Joseph High School, Calangute won the inaugural 7-a-side inter-school football tournament. The one-day event, a collaborative effort between the Don Bosco Past Pupils Association (Panjim Unit) and Don Bosco High School, Panjim, showcased a day of spirited competition among eight schools from across Goa.

The participating schools included hosts Don Bosco HS (Panjim), Marina English HS (Verna), Loyola HS (Margao), Fr. Agnel HS (Pilar), Regina Martyrum HS (Assolna), St. Joseph HS (Calangute), St. Britto HS (Mapusa) and The Rosary HS (Cujira).

The tournament commenced with an opening address by Albert D'Sa, President of the Don Bosco Past Pupils Association, and was officially inaugurated by Fr. Avin Carvalho, Principal of Don Bosco HS, Panjim.

The format saw the eight teams divided into two groups of four, engaging in league matches. The top two teams from each group then advanced to the semi-final stage.

Semi-final Results: St. Joseph HS, Calangute defeated Regina Martyrum HS, Assolna. Marina English HS, Verna overcame St. Britto HS, Mapusa

The final match proved to be a captivating encounter between St. Joseph HS, Calangute, and Marina English HS, Verna. After a fiercely contested goalless draw in regulation time, St. Joseph's emerged victorious with a 4-3 win in a dramatic penalty shoot-out. The match was characterized by determined and disciplined play from both sides. Marina's striker, Joy Calado, came close to scoring early, but his shot went just wide. St. Joseph's goalkeeper, Anshu Singh, delivered an outstanding performance with crucial saves throughout the match. Meanwhile, Vinizio Silveira, the midfielder for St. Joseph's, demonstrated impressive control and creativity, nearly scoring with a free-kick that hit the crossbar.

All participating teams were presented with certificates of participation. The winners and runners-up were further recognized with trophies and cash prizes for their achievements. The successful tournament concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Mr. Clyde Lobo, Secretary of the Don Bosco Past Pupils Association.

Best Striker: Joy Calado (Marina English HS, Verna)

Best Defender: Vailan Abranches (Marina English HS, Verna)

Best Goalkeeper: Anshu Singh (St. Joseph HS, Calangute)

Best Midfielder: Vinizio Silveira (St. Joseph HS, Calangute)
