The 38th Tiatr Competition organised by Kala Academy Goabegan on September 24, and will end only on November 12. In other words, thetiatr competition will continue for a total of 50 days. Although there are only30 tiatrs participating in the competition, it will take 50 days for thecompetition to wind down, only because tiatrs of competitions are never stagedon Saturdays and Sundays as the DMK auditorium of Kala Academy is reserved forcommercial activities on Saturdays and Sundays. Besides there are some more datesalready allotted for other activities and hence a competition which could havebeen completed in just 30 days finds itself prolonged for 50 days.
It is a very tedious job to judge the performances of 30tiatrs which are not staged continuously and many times with a gap of somedays. When the number of tiatrs is as many as 30 and the duration of stagingprolongs as long as 50 days, the judges will definitely find difficulties whilecompiling the results at the end of the competition. The impression of performancesof tiatrs staged in the beginning of the competition fades away in the minds ofthe judges due to passage of time. Judges being human, the impression of theperformances of tiatrs staged in the last days of the competition is fresh intheir minds. And therefore the tiatrsstaged during the last week of the competition are at an advantage.
Every year number of tiatrs participating in the yearlytiatr Competition is bound to increase. This is basically because of thefinancial support given to the participating troupes by Tiatr Academy of Goa.Therefore I feel that the Kala Academy should organize two Tiatrs Competitionsevery year in two sections. This could be further divided into Group ‘A’ TiatrCompetition and Group ‘B’ Tiatr Competition. Group ‘A’ will have not more than15 troupes and the remaining dramatic troupes can be placed in Group ‘B’. Sucha system of organisation will help the judges to prepare better results. Everyyear, after the results are announced, tiatrs performed in the Competition areplaced according to the percentage of marks given to them by the judges. Hencethe results of the ongoing 38th Tiatr Competition can be used to select the 15best dramatic troupes as per their performance vis-Ã -vis the percentage ofmarks obtained by them to be included in Group ‘A’ .The remaining dramatictroupes can be placed in Group ‘B’.
Once the organising of yearly tiatr competitions in Group‘A’ and Group ‘B’ is put in place, every year three tiatrs standing at the lastthree positions i.e. 13, 14 and 15 places in Group ‘A’ may be demoted to Group ‘B’ while threetiatrs securing first three places in Group ‘B’ may be promoted to Group ‘A’.Such a system will definitely help Kala Academy in organising the competitionsin a better way; the judges will be in a position to judge the performancesmore objectively and the dramatic troupes will get better opportunity toshowcase their performances as they will stage their tiatrs on a level playingfield. The judging will be of a more levelled nature and this system may perhaps yield better results.
