United Club Verna came from behind to defeat Cuncolim Union 4-1 in the opening match of the 45th Gold Silver Rolling Trophy, organised by Navelim Sporting Club at the Rosary Church ground, Navelim, on Sunday.
Cuncolim Union made a flying start, with Tushar Gaonkar putting them ahead in the second minute. UC Verna, however, quickly settled into the contest and restored parity through Hilton Fernandes in the 20th minute.
Verna then struck twice in the space of 11 minutes, with Joasle Fernandes scoring in the 23rd minute before Desmon Pereira added another in the 34th minute to give his side a 3-1 lead at half-time.
Cuncolim created several scoring opportunities after the changeover, but Daulat Dessai and Tushar Gaonkar failed to convert their chances. UC Verna punished them in the 50th minute when Meldon Moniz scored their fourth goal to seal a comfortable victory.
UC Verna’s Desmon Moniz was adjudged Player of the Match. The award was presented by Edwin Sipru Cardozo.
