MARGAO
Navelim Villagers Union edged past Varca Sports Club by a solitary goal to enter the quarter-finals of 29th Super Soccer football tournament organised by United Boys of Dando-Colva, at St John the Baptist Dando ground, Benaulim on Wednesday.
Both teams started the game on a cautious note. It was Varca Sports Club who took over the reins as Nash Pereira picked up the ball from Jhonus D’Costa. However, Navelim goalkeeper foiled his attempt as he palmed away the ball to saftey. At the other end, Navelim Villagers Union did not lag as striker Aldrich Coelho’s snap-shot found side-netting in the 5th minute.
Two minutes later, Aldrich Coelho’s rasping shot deflected off a rival defender and eluded the goalkeeper to roll into the net. Stung by the setback, Varca Sports Club intensified their attacks but could not penertate their rival citadel.
Post-resumption, Varca Sports Club went all out in search of the equaliser but the rival defenders stood tall in protecting their slender lead. Navelim Villagers Union had couple of scoring chances of their own, but their forwards failed to make the most.
