Varca Sports Club edged past Sporting Club of Davorlim 2-1 to clinch the All Goa Nagoa Panchayat Cup inter village football tournament title in an exciting final at panchayat ground, Nagoa on Sunday.
Both the teams showed attacking intent and the first good move came as early as the 2nd minute when Warren Pereira came close to finding the lead but rival defenders rose to the occasion to avert the danger. Varca Sports Club broke the deadlock in the 5th minute when Jhonus D’Costa slotted past the rival goalkeeper with a snap shot.
Stung by that setback, Sporting Club of Davorlim upped the ante and nearly levelled the score but striker Abhay Shetty only found the side netting much to the dismay of Davorlim supporters, in the 12th minute. After that scare, Varca Sports Club went into attacking mode and in the 26th minute, Nash Pereira scored the insurance goal.
Crossing over, Varca Sports Club slackened in their pace and allowed their opponents to get into a rhythm. Mack Borges scored the consolation goal late in the second half.
Varca Sports Club were richer by Rs 40,000 while Sporting Club of Davorlim had to settle for a prize of Rs 30,000. Nuvem MLA Wilfred D’Sa was the chief guest and gave away the prizes in presence of Trindade Pereira e Rodrigues, sarpanch of Nagoa Village Panchyat; Nelly Rodrigues, ZP member Colva; Reuben D’Costa, ZP member Nuvem; Rahul Rodrigues, vice president, opera tions, FC Goa, Fr Livio De Melo, parish priest of Nagoa church.
