MARGAO: Varca Veterans beat Nuvem Veterans 1-0 to advance into the quarter-finals of All Goa SAI Veterans football league, organised by SAI Veterans at Rosary ground, Navelim on Tuesday.
The all important goal was scored by Pele Fernandes. Varca had a chance to break the deadlock in the very 2nd minute but Yuri Ferrao spurned an easiest chance with only the rival goalkeeper to beat.
At the other end, Nuvem’s Miguel DSouza and Socorro Colaco muffed gilt-edged chances. After resumption, Varca Veterans put up an improved display but Alfred Fernandes’ curling shot sailed over the crossbar in the 54th minute.
The lone goal of the match came in the 56th minute when Pele Fernandes’ stinging shot beat the rival goalkeeper, off an Alfred Fernandes assist. With this win, Varca qualified for the quarters after finishing second in the group with 5 points. Quepem Veterans topped the group with 7 points.
