David Warner struck a composed half-century to lead the Sunrisers Hyderabad to a seven-wicket win over the Mumbai Indians in their Indian Premier League match at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad on Monday.
Mumbai posted 142-6 after 54 off 49 balls from Ambati Rayudu but Warner reined in his usual attacking instincts early on before he ended 90 not out off 59 balls with seven fours and four sixes as Hyderabad reached 145-3 off 17.3 overs. Warner faced 42 balls in raising his fifty before he upped the tempo of his innings and his efforts meant that Hyderabad secured their first win of the season after two losses. Tim Southee was the pick of Mumbai’s attack as the swing bowler claimed 3-24.
Hyderabad’s run chase started poorly when Southee yorked Shikhar Dhawan (2) in the first over before Warner and Moises Henriques (20) put on 62 runs for the second wicket. But Southee returned to the attack in the 11th over to have Henriques caught behind by keeper Parthiv Patel.
Southee claimed his third wicket when Eoin Morgan (11) was superbly caught at deep midwicket by a diving Hardik Pandya to leave the Sunrisers on 100-3 in the 15th over. Deepak Hooda (17 not out) joined Warner at the crease and the pair taking the attack to the bowlers with Warner winning the match with a six.
Earlier, Rayudu, who brought up his fifty off 43 balls, held Mumbai’s innings together after the visitors top order struggled as they slipped to 60-4 in the 11th over. The right-handed Rayudu shared in a 63-run fifth-wicket stand off just 6.3 overs with Krunal Pandya who belted his way to 49 not out off 28 deliveries with three fours and three sixes.
Hyderabad’s bowlers made good use of the early swing on offer with the new ball with left-arm seamer Barinder Sran claiming career-best figures of 3-28 while seamer Bhuvneshwar Kumar returned the excellent figures of 1-17 off four overs. Hyderabad won the toss and elected to bowl first and they struck almost immediately when Bhuvneshwar had IPL debutant Martin Guptill (2) caught behind by keeper Naman Ojha before a slower ball from Sran bowled Parthiv Patel (10) as Mumbai slipped to 23-2.
Rohit Sharma (5) and Rayudu pushed the score to 43 before he was run out at the keeper’s end after quite rightly being sent back for a non-existent run with Henriques flinging in a quick throw from the covers with Ojha completing the run out. Sran struck again when the dangerous Jos Buttler (11) gloved a short ball down to the leg side to the keeper as Mumbai lost their fourth wicket.
But Mumbai finally cut loose in the 14th over when Rayudu hammered a six and Krunal Pandya struck three consecutive sixes as left-arm spinner Bipul Sharma conceded 26 runs off the over. Rayudu’s innings was ended when he cut a delivery from Sran straight to Henriques at point in the 18th over. Left-arm quick Mustafizur Rahman (1-32), who bowled superbly at the death, bowled Hardik Pandya (2) as Mumbai could only score 19 runs off the last three overs of their innings.
