Agnelo Youth Sport Club Paroda edged past Sporting Club of Davorlim 1-0 to move into the quarterfinals of the Custodio Memorial Trophy football tournament organised by Raia Sporting Club at Raia Village Panchayat ground, on Saturday.
Selvin Miranda of Davorlim missed a chance to score in the 5th minute. Three minutes later, Jason Dias of Paroda shot wide. Jason netted the winner for Paroda in the 30th minute with a well taken placement shot. Agnelo Youth SC of Paroda will meet the winners of the match between Sao Jose de Areal and PAX of Nagoa Verna on July 10.
Chess: Ameya narrowly misses podium
International Master Ameya Audi continued his good form in the concluding tournament of the GM Chess Festival, Gitam University 3rd Vizag Grand Masters International Open Chess Tournament 2022.
Ameya, who was the 17th seed, put up a strong front as he defeated and drew with several top GMs and IMs. Ameya who was in the lead until the end of the 8th round, narrowly missed his chance of finishing in the top 3 as he drew with IM Nigmatov Ortik of Uzbekistan in the final round of the tournament to settle for an 8th place finish on account of a lower tiebreak. Ameya defeated GM Ziatdinov Raset of USA and GM Mitrabha Guha of WB, and drew with the first seed Amonatov Farrukh of Tajikistan, also the winner of the KIIT international and Pune international GM tournaments. Ameya drew with IM Gusain Himal of India.
Ameya had 5 wins and 4 draws to tally 7 points out of 10 rounds. GM Savchenko Boris of Russia won the championship with 8.5 points. There were 42 titled players and 146 participants from all over the world.
