Agxem Sports Club were crowned champions of the 2nd Corjem Youth Club 9-a-side Interward Football Tournament after a dramatic 5-4 victory over Novowaddo Sports Club in a penalty shootout at the St Alex Church Ground in Curtorim on Sunday.
Both teams played an exciting brand of attacking football throughout the match, keeping the crowd on edge, but despite numerous chances, neither side could break the deadlock during regulation time. The game ended in a 0-0 draw, forcing the match into a penalty shootout to determine the winner.
In the shootout, Agxem Sports Club held their nerve, with Alroy Gomes, Michael Paes, Josley Gomes, Joel Paes, and Jovial all converting their penalties. Novowaddo Sports Club responded with successful spot-kicks from Myson, Nazlie, Aliston, and Milagres, but it wasn't enough to secure the win, as Agxem triumphed 5-4.
The prize distribution ceremony followed the final, with Aleixo Reginaldo Lourenco, MLA of Curtorim and Chairman of GIDC, gracing the occasion as the chief guest. He handed over the trophies and prizes in the presence of several dignitaries, including Michelle Rebello, ZP Curtorim, Fr Manuel Dias, Parish Priest of St Alex Church, Curtorim, Fr Milagres Dias, and other officials from the club and local community.
Agxem Sports Club were awarded Rs 33,333 for their victory, while Novowaddo Sports Club received Rs 22,222 for finishing as runners-up. Bhatti SC, who finished in third place, received Rs 11,111, and Cumborda SC, in fourth place, were awarded Rs 5,555 along with a trophy.
