Canncona Sports and Cultural Club Blanked Rising Club Uguem 2-0 to enter the semifinals of the Late Afonso Aguiar memorial inter-village football tournament organised by Cuncolim Union at Cuncolim School Playground, Cuncolim, on Thursday.
In the 8th minute, Cancona scored the first goal through Yamnursab Pinjar, who shot past the Uguem goalkeeper from the edge of the box. In the second half, Uguem started with more aggression in pursuit of the equaliser. In the 52nd minute, Austin Diniz scored the second goal for Cancona. Velwin did well on the left flank and played a diagonal pass for his teammate to put the ball in an open net.
Velvino Fernandes was named the Man of the Match and received the prize from Prakash Dessai, Secretary of CES Institution.
Earlier, Varca Sports Club prevailed over St Cruz Club of Cavelossim 6-5 via tiebreaker to enter the semifinals. Varca's Maclin Mascarenhas converted an opportunity in the 55th minute, floating a long cross into the goal after the rival goalkeeper had moved up, leaving the goal open.
Cavelossim equalised in the final minute with a fine goal by Bleston Rodrigues. In the tiebreaker, Joylon Cardoso, Salim Sadekar, Mohamad Shaikh, Constancio Rodrigues and Klinson Pereira scored for Varca while Rohan Mullar, Paren Estibeiro, Ashwil Afonso and Asley Afonso found the mark for Varca. Varca will meet Navelim Sporting in the first semifinal.
St Savio edge past Candolim SC 2-1
St Savio Sports Club scored a hard-fought 2-1 win over Candolim Sports Club to move into the quarterfinals of the 15th London Trophy Inter-village football tournament at Goa Velha Sports Club ground on Thursday.
At half time, the teams were locked goalless. Joyson D'Souza put St Savio into the lead in the 42nd minute when his effort from close range beat Cane Barretto in the Candolim goal. Alister Fernandes consolidated the lead and made it 2-0 in favour of St Savio in the 61st minute.
Sanket Jotkar finally reduced the margin for Candolim when his shot hit the side post and trickled into the goal in the 64th minute. Namresh Kundaikar of St Savio was named the Man of the Match.
Micon Warriors march into last-four
Micon Warriors of Agalli Fatorda defeated Friends of Zoriwaddo Davorlim 2-0 and moved into the semifinals of the 16th Rebello Pandal football tournament organised by Rebello Pandal, at St Rita Church ground, Maina on Thursday.
Max of Friends missed two chances in the seventh and 10th minutes. Micon Warriors netted two quick goals through Maxwell Furtado and Tappa in the 47th and 58th minutes, respectively. Max of Friends of Zoriwaddo Davorlim received the Man of the Match prize at the hands of Rosario.
Masters badminton nationals from March 19
Goa Badminton Association will host the 45th Indian Masters National Badminton Championships 2022-2023 from March 19 to 26 at Manohar Parrikar Indoor Stadium, Navelim.
It is a selection championship to pick the best players to represent India in the BWF World Senior Badminton Championships 2023 to be held in South Korea later in the year. Over 2270 entries across 45 events from age categories of 35+ to 75+ have been received for the event, where players born in the year 1987 and earlier are eligible.
Goa’s Sandhya Melasheemi, Ashutosh Pednekar, Dr Satish Kudchadkar, Manjiri Moktali, Sandip Kanji, Kamlesh Kanji, Amit Kakkar, Vishal Vernekar, and Pankaj Naik are some of the top Goa players who will be strong contenders for medals.
Dempo Veterans, Signals Veterans play 2-2 draw
Dempo Veterans and Signals Veterans played out a 2-2 draw in an exhibition match organised by 3MTR at Signals ground, Navelim.
Avertano Furtado, the goalkeeper of Dempo Veterans, gave his best under the bar while for Signals Veterans' Sanjeet Sarkar gave his best. Signals gave a good display of passing and assists. Dempo dominated the first 10 minutes with Mario Soares and Climax Lawrence missing chances to score.
Signals' Pradphan scored a brace, netting in the sixth and 10th minutes, to put his team ahead. Dempo Veterans' Rosario Dias netted a brace (35th and 60th minutes) to level the score. Chief guest Brahmanand Shankhwalkar gave away the prizes in the presence of Dr Umar Farrooq, VSM, Avertano Furtado, ex-MLA of Navelim constituency, Colonel Karanjit Singh and other dignitaries.
