Football leaders and admirers pay final respects

MARGAO

Hundreds gathered to pay their respects to the late Sports Minister Francisco Monte Cruz at his residence on Wednesday.

Among those who honored his memory were Dr Caitano Fernandes, President of the Goa Football Association; Alberto Colaco, AWES; and Agnelo Fernandes, President of Salcete Football Club. Fernandes and Colaco placed wreaths and expressed their heartfelt condolences to Monte Cruz's family, acknowledging that his loss leaves a significant void.

The grief was palpable among Monte Cruz's relatives and admirers. Colaco reflected on his close association with Monte Cruz, recalling the critical role he played in the construction of the stadium. "From the moment the foundation stone was laid on May 30, 1998, Monte Cruz dedicated himself to ensuring the project's timely completion. He spent nearly 12 hours a day at the site, meticulously overseeing every detail to avoid any delays that could embarrass both him and the Government of Goa."

"He left his imprints on the Goa's football field. His biggest contribution is the building of Nehru Stadium in record 8 months and hosting of prestigious Nehru Cup international which saw record attendance. In this field he shone as a bright star without resorting to corrupt practices which now are the order of the day. He is the father of Sports Authority of Goa which was conceived by him in order to build the stadium to international standards and to host the prestigious tournament. I had the unique privilege of being closely associated with the two epoch-making projects in the State." said Jovito Lopes.

Others who offered their condolences included Anthony Pango, Senior Vice President of the Goa Football Association; Schubert Furtado, Treasurer of the Goa Football Association; and Jacinto Fernandes, Secretary of Salcete Football Club.
