GFA vice-president Lavinio Rebello loses battle to Covid-19

Lavinio Rebello, the senior vice-president (North) of Goa Football Association, passed away late Saturday evening due to Covid-19 related complications. He was undergoing treatment at SMRC, Vasco as he battled the virus for nearly 15 days.

Rebello was part of the Executive Committee of the GFA for many years and he led many organising committees whenever Goa held any international or national competitions. He was also the deputy chairperson of the All India Football Federation's (AIFF) Futsal and Beach Soccer Committee.

AIFF general secretary Kushal Das said in his condolence message: "AIFF fraternity is shocked to hear the sad demise today of Lavinio Rebello. Rebello was a great lover of football and his dedication for football was unparalleled.

"Rebello, a passionate football administrator, will be remembered for his contribution to Goan Football and as a member of the AIFF Futsal and Beach Soccer Committee."

Das added, "On behalf of the AIFF president, Praful Patel, and all staff of the AIFF, we extend our heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family for this tragic and irreparable loss."

Expressing his condolences to the bereaved family, AIFF Director of Competitions Anil Kamat said: "This (Sunday) morning we woke up to the very sad news of Rebello's demise. We at AIFF share the grief of his family and friends.” 

Former India coach Armando Colaco in his tribute to Rebello said, “Goa has lost a great administrator of football. A dynamic, charming personality, Rebello was always willing to help and promote football. May God grant him eternal rest in heaven.” 

“Words are not enough to count the assistance and cooperation Rebello extended to officials, players, and to all those who came in contact with him. He was my mentor and I will miss him,” Franky Fernandes, Head of referees department of GFA, said.

Meanwhile, the mortal remains of Rebello were laid to rest at St Michael Church Cemetery, Anjuna on Sunday evening. Rebello's close family, including his mother and sister, paid the last homage to him. Anthony Pango, GFA vice-president (South Goa), and GFA executive members, Anthony Leo Fernandes, John Silva and Arnaldo Costa were among those who attended the funeral.
