1 Goa Battalion NCC won the Karnataka & Goa NCC Directorate NCC qualifiers, at St Paul's high school in Belgaum.
In the concluding league game, the Goan boys drew with the Combined Karnataka NCC team consisting of cadets predominantly from North East.
With this Goa will have two teams at the Subroto Cup with the Champion school of Goa, Perpetual Succor Navelim, the NCC Goa team which is made of cadets whose schools got eliminated in the earlier rounds of the state Subroto Cup Competition or from remote areas of Goa, like Keri, Satteri, Marcel, and Bicholim whose schools did not even participate in the Subroto tournament.
Col Jesus Furtado Commanding Officer 1 Goa Battalion NCC said that he is overjoyed with this achievement but the ultimate aim is to win the Subroto cup which has eluded Goa since 1989. “Goa will bring back the Subroto Cup this year, also the craze for football is a force multiplier to spread nationalism and respect for the men in uniform as NCC is the first step for a child dreaming of entering in the Indian Armed Forces,” he said.
Earlier, the Goa NCC team defeated Mysuru 7-1 and Bengaluru 3-0 to top the points table. Tanish Tendulkar (1), Aaryav Da Costa (3), Andreas Furtado (1), Nathan Fernandes (1), Mark D'Costa (1) and Reuben Barbosa (3) were the stand out goal scorers for Goa. The team was coached by PE teacher Ramesh Honnali, of Loyola High School, Margao.
