Goans Hockey has launched an ambitious grassroots development program aimed at unearthing talent and strengthening both the national senior and junior teams for men and women.
As the registered State Sports Association affiliated with Hockey India, Goans Hockey oversees the sport in Goa for all genders. The association has been active in promoting hockey through regular camps and tournaments, receiving commendations from the Sports Authority of Goa for organizing state championships across all categories, including senior, junior, and sub-junior levels.
Since its inception in 2009, Goans Hockey has represented the state in National Hockey Championships conducted by Hockey India.
“The 12 talukas will provide young athletes with exposure to match conditions similar to national championships. Shortlisted athletes will participate in nationals, offering them opportunities to further enhance their skills,” said Abhay Bhamaikar, president of Goans Hockey.
To identify talent, each taluka will establish committees responsible for monitoring players' progress. “Selectors and coaches will keep us updated on the players' development,” Bhamaikar added.
The focus is on holistic player development within the camps, where athletes will be trained under qualified coaches. The grassroots development committee will identify training bases with adequate facilities, allowing for tracking of players’ progress from various age groups. This initiative aims to assess each player's skill set and refine their abilities.
Additionally, Goans Hockey plans to establish a state-of-the-art hockey center in Fatorda, primarily catering to local children. When asked about the timeline for completion, Bhamaikar stated that the project is in the pipeline and is expected to progress soon.
He also revealed that Goans Hockey has recommended two players for participation in the Hockey India League.
