In a promising development for the sport in Goa, Dr. Dilip Tirkey, President of Hockey India, has assured full support to Abhay Bhamaikar, President of Goans Hockey, for the promotion and development of hockey in the state.
The assurance came during discussions held on the sidelines of the Hockey India Annual General Meeting (AGM) in Chennai, Tamil Nadu.
“We had a fruitful conversation about strengthening hockey in Goa, a state that has produced legendary players in the past,” said Bhamaikar. “Our discussions marked a significant step forward in reviving and advancing the sport here.”
Bhamaikar also shared that Hockey India has allotted a coaching course and a FIH seminar to be conducted in Goa”an initiative aimed at grassroots development and upskilling local talent.
Highlighting Dr. Tirkey’s leadership style, Bhamaikar added, “As a player, Dilip Tirkey was known for his quiet determination and clear vision. As President of Hockey India, he brings the same focused approach”not chasing popularity from the top down, but working from the bottom up, alongside the federation and the government.”
Bhamaikar further briefed Dr Tirkey about the condition of the hockey pitch at Fatorda, to which the Hockey India President responded with understanding and promised all necessary assistance to help improve the ground’s infrastructure.
