Goa’s Shrisha Jampula settled for a bronze medal at the 5th Elite Women's National Boxing Championship in Hisar, Haryana after losing her semifinals bout in the light middleweight (66-70kg) category on Tuesday.
The Goan was easily outpunched by current world youth champion Arundhati Choudhary of Rajasthan, securing an RSC decision against the Goan. Arundhati recently became the first-ever female boxer from Rajasthan to win a gold medal in the AIBA Youth World Boxing Championships. She has won many national and international titles and recently bagged bronze at the ASBC Youth Asian Men & Women Championship in Mongolia in 2019.
The bronze won by Shrisha is Goa’s first in 18 years after Vidya Bandekar’s bronze in 2003. The Goan boxer had beaten Shivani Bharti from Bihar by a split decision (3:2) in the last-eight clash on Monday. Shrisha now stands a chance to be selected for the Elite National Camp through a round of selection trials.
